Many of our guests contact us before their stay, to ask us to recommend some local activites. We’re spoilt for choice here, with the Bannau Brycheiniog, Brecon Beacons National Park, on our doorstep. We’re also close enough to the coast to allow for a trip that includes some beach based activity days. We will regularly share some of the activities in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), that we, or our guests, have enoyed. I hope they help you plan for your trip.
Three outdoor activities for animal and nature lovers
- Half a day with Wings of Wales on a Falconry Experience. If you’ve always wanted to get up close and personal with some of our native birds of prey, this is for you. The half day experience includes a chance to watch and even ‘hunt’ with Harris Hawks, falcons and an owl. The experience is 3.5 hours and you can find more details here As they’re based in Penderyn, you can always arrange to visit the famous distillery afterwards. Take a look here to find out more.
- If you adore animals and nature, then A Good Day Out is ideal for your experience. This great team organise activities, with animals, in the Brecon Beacons. From a walk with a miniature donkey to picnics with pigs, they have something for everyone. And they make a contribution to an animal charity or good cause for every experience they sell. - After dark, when it’s really – no seriously REALLY dark here, a bit of star gazing is a great activity. We’re lucky enough to be in a dark sky zone and our guests tell us that they watch the stars from our hot tub. However, wherever you’re staying, you’re not far from an ideal spot to watch the stars and take some spectacular night time photographs. The Brecon Beacons National Park have an excellent list of ten places to watch the stars and you can find all the details here.
Activities in the Brecon Beacons carry on whatever the weather
Come prepared to take part, whatever the Welsh weather has in store. It can change dramatically here, so rain is unlikely to stop you enjoying your chosen activity, Do check with the venue beforehand if they recommend you bring any special clothing or footware.
And if you wanted to visit a beach, then we’d recommend you hop in the car, or use the Heart of Wales Line train from Llandovery and visit one of our favourite beaches. There are plenty of activities on offer at many of the coastal spots in Wales.
Our favourite beaches and costal walks
- Pendine Sands, in Carmarthenshire, is the perfect spot for a day lazing on a sandy beach and building sand castles. The beach is dog friendly and open all year round. There’s a seven mile stretch of beach to enjoy and a lifeguard is on duty in the summer.
- Three Cliffs Bay, Gower Penninsular. This is one of the most photographed spots in the Gower. It has magnificent scenery to enjoy and despite its fame is rarely busy. During the winter you can walk along the cost path without meeting another sole. This breathtaking part of the Welsh coast is worth the 1 hour 20 minute drive from The Charcoal Hut. - Tenby is a great day out for a more traditional ‘sea side town’ feel. We love the fish and chips here and also the warm welcome. Tenby has lots of beaches to enjoy and is also the start of the Pembrokeshire National Coastal Park, with some glorious walks. Find out more and plan your visit here.
